He will always be my baby

Tuesday, 2 October 2007

I enjoy Lian's post on Yean that I want to add my feelings.

He was smaller than her sister at birth, 3.05 kg. He was impatient to see the world. Medically calculated to be born on Monday 13 October, but decided he wanted to be born on Thursday 2 October - 11 days earlier! 6 months old, the circumference of his head was 43 cm and the length of his body was 67.8 cm.

The baby has grown to a young man today! Today is a special turning point in his life. He is 21 years old! He is now a young man! But he will always be my baby.

Happy Birthday Yean!

An account of the hours before Yean's birth:

I haven't taken my maternity leave yet. It was Wednesday 1 October. I was working in the office when I felt nauseated and sick. I decided to take the afternoon off and rest at Mum's place. Went back to my own home in the evening. The water bag burst at home that night and I was taken to the clinic by eldest sister-in-law since Liew was offshore. Yean came into the world the next morning at 4:50 hrs. His birth was easier than his sister.

A period of time as a toddler:

I was working full time. Yean stayed with a relative during the weekdays. Because of work demand, I had to work weekends and sometimes a stretch of 2 weekends in a row, and so we didn't get to bring him home every weekend. We understood the consequence of Yean not wanting to go back with us if we didn't visit him and spend time with him often. Every time I went to see him I had this fear. I realised that lost time did not affect him. Yean knew that I love him because whenever he sees me, no matter how long the absence was, he always stretch his arms towards me.

Mistaken Identities, Funny Moments:

We were shopping at the GK supermarket in Pujut 3 - Lian, Yean and me. Yean was probably 6-7 years old. Lian & Yean were somewhere closeby looking at things while I was queuing for the cashier. Next thing I saw was a lady looking down at her side and smiled amusingly. Yean was at her side, trying to grab her hands. He was not looking at her because he thought she was me!

Same thing happened in Lawas in 1997 when Lian, Yean and I was on a social-dance visit to Lawas/Limbang in 1997. Our Miri group was leaving the hall. Sheila was shocked but amused when she realised that it was my little boy who was trying to grap her hand. My little boy thought that Sheila was me. Sheila looked almost the same as me from behind, with almost the same body build, height and hair style!

Yean's Thoughtfulness:

I was alone, sick and asleep in bed, once in Miri, once in Kota Kinabalu. I didn't expect this. He must have quietly crept into the room, pulled the blankets upward towards my neck, and left the room. He was less than 12 years old in Miri and a teenager in Kota Kinabalu. I was sleeping but I knew and felt his young hands moving the blankets.
